The local Midsomer Norton nature reserve has been praised in a national award scheme and described as a real gem.

The Reserve has been awarded a Green Flag Award Community Winner in the latest rankings.

Judges praised the Midsomer Norton site and wrote:

" Silver Street Local Nature Reserve is a true gem! Nestled into the hillside on the edge of Midsomer Norton the reserve has a woodland, a meadow, a pond and a historic springhead.

"There are indications that there has been woodland on the site for many years. Tree species include oak, ash, hazel and it is thought that it was traditionally managed as a coppice. This would account for the colourful range of spring flowers that are to be found in the woodland such as Bluebells, Dog Violets, Celandines and Ramsons."

The area was originally part of an estate connected to a large house which was demolished in the 1930's and now is a haven for insects and butterflies. While at night visitors can spot several species of bat zipping up and down the hedgerows.

The award also praises improved visitor information on the site and through the press and social media.

Over 220 parks and green spaces across the country have received the prestigious Green Flag Award and Green Flag Community Award, from country parks and formal gardens, to allotments, woodlands and churchyards.
