One in five people in the South West are scared of zombies, according to a Hallowe'en survey

A new survey, conducted by online party supplies retailer, Party Delights has revealed that around one in five people who live in the South West are scared of zombies.

When asked "What type of fictional Halloween creature, if any, scares you?" 21 per cent of residents in the region answered zombies, which was seven per cent more than the next highest with 14 per cent citing demons.

Vampires ranked next with six per cent of participants choosing the nocturnal, fanged creatures as the scariest of all fictional creatures.

Werewolves weren't too far behind gaining five per cent of votes from South West residents, while aliens followed with three per cent.

Witches and dragons rounded off the list each being cited by just one per cent of respondents based in the South West region.

Just over a third of respondents inthe region (34 per cent) said that no fictional Halloween creature scares them and a further 14 per cent answered "don't know" to the question.

Nationally, Zombies were also the most popular choice when it came to the survey question with 18 per cent choosing the living dead creatures as the one that they are most fearful of.

Sarah Allsop, creative manager at Party Delights said: "We certainly didn't expect to have such clear winners for this question.

"Perhaps people's fear of zombies can be put down to their recent portrayal in pop culture. Well-watched shows like The Walking Dead and The Last of Us may have had a g an effect on what scares people the most .

"While a hefty percentage of South West-based respondents did answer that no fictional creature scares them, a nearly one-in-five ratio for zombies is still high. It's interesting to see people cite that particular creature over the others on the list that have arguably been a scarier presence on TV and film screens over the years."
