Frome Museum re-opens with a new display, The Story of the Frome Hoard

By Tesni Daniel 14th Mar 2024

Frome Museum has re-opened with a fresh, new look and a new display, 'The Story of the Frome Hoard'.

This important local discovery is the largest coin hoard found in Britain to date, and the second largest treasure hoard.

Unearthed in 2010 by local metal detectorist Dave Crisp, it comprises 52,503 Roman coins contained in a ceramic pot, and has been dated to the period AD 253 to 293.

The new display showcases a replica of the urn and part of the coin hoard and tells their fascinating story.

The museum was delighted to welcome Dave Crisp to the re-opening event, together with the Mayor and Mayoress of Frome and Anne Shepherd who, with her husband Geoff, farms the land where the hoard was found.

Frome Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday and on Frome Independent Market Sundays, 10.00am -2.00pm. Admission is free.
