The letter calls for collective action following the tragic event in Radstock when a 16 year old died in a stabbing.
I don't think there can be a single reader that hasn't been moved by the tragic events in Radstock on Sunday, July 31st. Whilst I appreciate that these incidents are very rare, anti-social behaviour is all too familiar across the Somer Valley.
What happened in Radstock could have happened in Midsomer Norton. South Road car park, the Somer Centre, there are plenty of areas in Midsomer Norton where an incident could have taken place. We all stand with Radstock in uniting against this terrible crime and now is the time we all need to come together.
We can all do our bit by reporting incidents to the police. It's easy to understand why people have become disillusioned about reporting anti-social behaviour, because nothing ever happens, but now we need to take a stand. Midsomer Norton Town Council has held meetings with the Community Alcohol Partnership. A CAP brings together local partners, such as schools, retailers, police, trading standards, youth services and B&NES, with a shared interest in reducing underage drinking and associated anti-social behaviour.
Why can't Midsomer Norton join with Radstock, Paulton and Westfield, working together to make sure that B&NES and the Avon and Somerset Police address the real issues we face? Midsomer Norton Town Council operates town marshalls, can this scheme be extended to other areas? The Somer Valley Area Forum is due to meet next month, providing a platform for B&NES to hear what's going on in our community.
This meeting must address the serious issue of anti-social behaviour and I'd urge Jacob Rees Mogg to attend, to explain what his Government is doing to tackle knife crime and anti-social behaviour in Britain today. Anti-social behaviour is the thin end of the wedge. No one can be in any doubt where this problem will end if it is allowed to persist unchecked. Now is not the time for politicians with slippery shoulders. There is so much we can do to tackle these problems, if only we would work together.
