Midsomer Norton and Radstock Branch of the Royal British Legion have a busy month ahead.

The group will be at the farmers market on September 4th and then the following day they will be at 2pm at the Double Hills Ceremony in Paulton.

The ceremony is to remember the 23 lives lost when their glider crashed into the meadow. The crash occurred on Sunday 17th September 1944 and they were the first casualties of the "Operation – Market Garden" colloquially known as "A Bridge Too Far".

Those who lost their lives included 21 Airborne Sappers from the Royal

Engineers and the two pilots from the Glider Pilot Regiment. The Stirling

bomber and the glider it was towing took off from RAF Keevil near

Trowbridge and was en-route to Arnhem.

September is of course, an important commemorative month for the service charity, as on 1st September 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Two days later, on Sunday 3rd September, after a British ultimatum to Germany to cease military operations was ignored, Britain and France declared war.

Meantime the Branch holds a monthly meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 19:30 at Welton Rovers.

A reminder that if you are a Branch member, you are welcome to attend but you can also bring a guest. Please let Max Feeney via email on [email protected] to get sent an invitation.
