Radstock: the emerging Mecca for Cyclists ?

In his latest column, the Radstock Mayor writes:

As people gradually realise that spending money on advance air travel is tantamount to giving airlines an interest free – and often non-returnable-loan, it is good to see many families taking to their bikes to explore the countryside instead.

I hosted such a family over the week-end and a very jolly time was had. For one thing, Radstock is a sort of Mecca for the amateur cyclist. I use the word 'amateur' to distinguish them from the lycra clad racers who creep up behind you (no warning bell) and frighten one's dog into the bargain. My guests were admiring the shear beauty of the four Sustrans paths and being interested in ecology, were most attentive to my observations on the rich flora which line the paths.

Clearly the paths constitute a huge asset to the town and I believe that given the fresh air and health benefits that accompany cycling adventures, we can expect a growing number of users. All these visitors to the town require refreshment, retail therapy and cultural diversion. We need to hold Radstock up as the 'go to' destination.

Last week the Town Council discussed how we might be able to organise temporary markets either on the purpose-built piazza next to the computer shop or on the Tom Huyton Car Park. I consider that both venues have merits and could provide opportunities not only for the existing traders but for others who may not be represented in the town. A Christmas market was mooted.

In these straitened times, let us seize what opportunities exist and make something of them for the good of all and the future prosperity of our town.
