Shoscombe School celebrates Black History Month and Children's Literature

Local News by Susie Watkins 21st Oct 2020

Children at Shoscombe Church School have been marking two significant themes this month.

October is officially Black History Month, a month-long event to commemorate and celebrate the contribution that Black people have made to society across the globe.

Headteacher, Ruth Noall, said: "Our Key Stage Two children have been learning about Black History. This has involved looking at The Slave Trade, Windrush, The American and Civil Rights Movement and Migrants to Huddersfield in history.

During Art lessons we have also been studying African Masks, their influence on Picasso and the Cubist Movement.

Understanding the invaluable contribution that people from a wide range of backgrounds, be they racial, religious or cultural, make to our communities is really important. It's a huge part of our children's learning at Shoscombe Church School."

Children have also taken part in the virtual Bath Childrens' Literature Festival.

The face-to-face events were cancelled this year due to the pandemic, but that didn't stop schools taking part online.

Ruth added: "This wonderful event is an opportunity to celebrate children's literacy and help remind us why reading is so important.

Bali Rai, English author of children's and young adult fiction, points out that reading for pleasure is the single biggest factor in success later in life, outside of an education. Study after study has shown that those children who read for pleasure are the ones who are most likely to fulfil their ambitions. If your child reads, they will succeed - it's that simple!"

Research shows that only 17% of parents still read to their child after the age of 9, but according to a study by Scholastic (publishers of children's literature), 87% of children age 6 to 11 said they liked being read to and wished their parents would continue reading to them.

"So, let's make it our mission this year to read more, read together and read for pleasure", said Ruth.
