A local zero waste campaigner has been on the local community radio with some inspiring ideas of how everyone can cut down on what they put into landfill, with even small changes making a big impact.

Lucy Tudor of the Midsomer Norton and Radstock Zero Waste group was on the One Small Step programme with a broadcast on how we can all cut down on waste.

Lucy told the Somer Valley FM morning show, that everyone can chip away at the levels of things that we throw away and that the new community shops offering refills are a big part of the solution.

One simple thought she offered on the radio show: " A simple swap, is just to swap a bottle of liquid soap for a bar of soap. It lasts for ages, and it is something we can all do and it saves you money. It can also be quite a nice thing, a bit of treat to buy a nice bar of soap."

There are several local zero waste shops now offering refills including The Green Shop in Midsomer Norton, Filler Up in Radstock ,Wellow Community Shop and Farrington Farm shop, which also offers refills for milk.

Lucy added : " I was quite interested how this is happening globally and so I signed up to a webinar on Zero Waste Cities, and a survey across Europe showed each of these kind of small shops saves a tonne of packaging per year, each shop, each small shop making a big difference."

In case you missed it this week the government postponed the new Environment Bill which would force companies to pay for waste to be dealt with.

Rebecca Pow, minister at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: "We remain fully committed to the environment bill as a key part of delivering the government's manifesto commitment to create the most ambitious environmental programme of any country on earth."

The government insists that bill will continue, even with the delay due to coronavirus, and will establish an Office for Environmental Protection, a watchdog for the UK's environmental standards.
