This week, the Government announced plans to invest billions into the NHS, including £2.7 billion of investment for six hospital trusts over five years.

The announcement that was made by the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, signals the end of austerity and is both a welcome and much-needed injection of cash into the NHS.

As well as forty new hospitals being built, Mr Hancock confirmed that £13 billion will be spent on existing hospital projects, such as completely new buildings or the refurbishment of existing ones so that facilities can be improved.

Thirty-four hospitals will initially receive £100 million to begin projects and finish remaining ones. Plans include £200 million for replacing old or outdated equipment.

The Health Secretary also outlined the new approach that will be taken to help those who suffer with mental health issues, adopting a new style of treatment that will be piloted in 12 different areas of England.

This will be in tandem with housing and job support as well as psychological assistance, creating around 1,000 specialist positions.

I embrace the Government's programme, which will see many hospitals, like the Royal United Hospital, benefiting from this bold, dynamic policy that also extends to other public sector areas such as the police, education and housing.

The Prime Minister has promised to deliver Brexit but as he has been rightly saying, domestic policy has been taking a backseat and must now be our focus as we leave the European Union on October 31. It is time to put Britain first.
