On track, Midsomer Norton's heritage station opens the season with an appeal for more volunteers
The heritage station up at Midsomer Norton has re-opened for the season with a new bookshop for railway enthusiasts and train fans.
The Somerset and Dorset Railway may promote itself as a trip back in time, but there is lots new at the station HERE: And you could be part of it.
Head of retail Roger Burfitt who also wears a second hat as Vice Chair of Trustees told Nub News: " The first day back is wonderful, it so lovely to see people again, comfortable numbers rather than really busy which is great because we are just getting into the swing of things. " The new Somerset and Dorset emporium is a new venture at the station, inside one of the carriages on site. Roger told us : " We have long wanted to do this because we have had increasing numbers of donated books, and model railways, jigsaws and DVDS, but until now we have not had anywhere to sell them from. " The range includes many books on the Somerset and Dorset railway itself, one of the most written about railways, and a scale model of Midsomer Norton station together with Norton Hill colliery, modelled in N gauge, donated and with put together with the help of Shepton Mallet railway club. Lots to see and lots to do - but only if they can get more volunteers. "We are desperate for more volunteers, " says Roger. " People who can come and help us with this new shop, help in the buffet car... not just people who run the trains. Anybody who fancies coming along, even for a few hours, we would be very pleased. It is a great place if you are new to the area, or are at a lose end or even a bit lonely, you would be most welcome to come up here. You do not need to know about railways. You just need to be enthusiastic."
