A man in his 30s remains in custody today (April 20) after armed police tackled a man in Radstock following reports of an assailant reportedly using a gun and firing at people. Eyewitnesses say they saw someone using a rifle, with some suggesting it was a 22, and aiming at people in flats at Huish Court. Several members of the public called the police in the early evening of April 19. Huish Court is off Mells Lane, a road which is opposite the Fromeway pub on the main road down into Radstock. Armed officers were at the scene and were seen approaching over garden fences to track down the gun man. At least two officers were carrying guns and they also had a police dog with them. The police confirmed the incident in the following media statement: "Just after 6pm on Sunday 19 April police were called by a witness reporting a man firing an air weapon from a garden in Huish Court, Radstock. Specialist armed officers responded and a man was arrested on suspicion of affray just after 7.10pm. He remains in police custody at the time of writing." This is not the first time locals have reported shots being fired in that area, but reports on social media have previously been dismissed as vehicle noises. In June 2018, Meshach Caven-Thompson, 33, knifed Phillip Jones to death at a house in Huish Court. Thompson was later convicted of murder and jailed for a minimum of 21 years.
