The view of the nation's High Street is looking particularly bleak at the moment with job losses announced this week by big household names including WH Smith and M&Co.

So Midsomer Norton Nub News is particularly pleased to be delivering some welcome local news.

After a special request for information under an Freedom Of Information request we have learned the exact sum that the town is in line to get to revive its High Street.

After struggling to get answers on how much from the national regeneration money Midsomer Norton will be getting from both the local and regional councils, we applied to English Heritage to find out exactly how much the town is in line to get.

Midsomer Norton was offered part of a £95 million fund to revive the nation's high streets last September.

Today ( August 6) we can reveal that, according to English Heritage be getting a total sum of £793,000.

It is not clear when and how the money will be released and what limitations will be put on how it is spent.

The exact details were revealed in the following FOI from Midsomer Norton Nub News :...

'I would like to know what has happened to the funding awarded by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport for the regeneration of Midsomer Norton. Please can you confirm where the money is currently and that it is £780,000?'

In response they actually increased it, replying:

Having looked into your request and consulted with my colleagues I am pleased to provide the following information:

The funding is to be administered by Historic England on behalf of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Currently, the money allocated for Midsomer Norton is being held by Historic England. The total currently set aside for the Heritage Action Zone of Midsomer Norton is £793,000.

Councillor Gordon Mackay who also heads up planning in Midsomer Norton Town Council told Nub News: "Personally, I think it's very exciting that we've been awarded this sum of money although I'm not sure when the funds will be released or to whom.

"Midsomer Norton has seen some fantastic improvements in the last few years with new development at the Cricket Club, expansion of the railway and currently underway, improved access to the rugby club.

"Various projects have been mooted, such as restoring the town market and I believe it's important that the funds are used in such a way as to provide a lasting benefit to the the town, one which will in turn generate more benefits. I also think it's essential that the money is spent transparently and that control is devolved to accountable interests within the town to ensure the funds are used effectively."
