With less than a month to go until the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, Bath and North East Somerset's council Leader Kevin Guy took time out to wish some of the Bath athletes going for gold in Tokyo the very best of luck.

Councillor Guy met with Team GB's Modern Pentathlon squad who are based at Pentathlon GB's National Training Centre at the University of Bath.

Kate French, Joana Muir, Joseph Choong, James Cooke, Thomas Toolis (reserve) and Francesca Summers (reserve) are making their final preparations for the Games which get underway on Friday 23 July.

The athletes are part of a strong 'Team Bath' Olympic contingent, including nine swimmers and three Judo players.

Councillor Kevin Guy said: "It was fantastic to meet the team and their coaches. We're incredibly proud that, once again, athletes based at Bath University have such a strong presence at the Olympics. It will make the Games all the more exciting for us as we cheer them on from home.

"These amazing athletes have all reached the pinnacle of their sport and have coped remarkably well with the challenges posed by Covid and the year long delay of the Games.

"On behalf of Bath and North East Somerset, I'd like to wish Team GB the very best of luck in Tokyo and I've no doubt our local athletes will do themselves proud."

'Team Bath' have a strong track record at the Olympics with athletes who train at the Sports Training village at Claverton Down, having won medals at every Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games since Sydney 2000 and every Winter Olympics since Salt Lake City in 2002.
