B&NES help for smokers to quit

By Susie Watkins 10th Mar 2021

Smokers who want to find out more about quitting and the effect of smoking on stress and mental health are invited to a free online event today - national No Smoking Day (Wednesday March 10).

The B&NES Community Wellbeing Hub's specialist stop smoking team is holding an event to support the national awareness day, which this year has the theme 'Quitting smoking doesn't have to be so stressful'.

Studies show that when people stop smoking it boosts their mental health and wellbeing, their stress and anxiety levels are lower and the effect of stopping smoking can equal that of antidepressants

The online event on March 10 from 3pm-4pm will explore the link between smoking and stress, with tips on how to make quitting easier including easy relaxation techniques. Smokers can sign up by calling the Hub on 0300 247 0050, texting 07540677028 or emailing [email protected]

The Community Wellbeing Hub is a collaboration between Bath & North East Somerset Council, CCG BANES, Virgin Care and third sector partner organisations.

Councillor Rob Appleyard, cabinet member for Adult Services and Public Health, said: "No Smoking Day is an opportunity for people to begin thinking positively about a smoke free future. The benefits of quitting for mental health are less known than the more widely understood physical health benefits of quitting. Most people will notice significantly improved mental wellbeing after just six weeks.

"One of the reasons smokers report struggling to quit is that it is too stressful, which is exacerbated by lockdown. However, we know that many smokers have quit for good during the pandemic and we are encouraging current smokers in B&NES to take that first step too. As a former smoker, I know the challenge to actually give up smoking but equally know the benefits, not only for health but your wallet. If you are ready to make a change, join the event and find out about the advice and support available."

Jo Scammell, Head of Commissioning and Wellbeing at VirginCare, said: "We are really pleased to be holding this online event to provide support to people who are trying to give up smoking. The Community Wellbeing Hub has a whole range of support services for people and staff are on hand to provide expert advice and support."
