Still lots to learn : This Midsomer Norton centre looks forward to September while lessons thrive on line

Two and a half years ago the Kip McGrath Education Centre opened on Midsomer Norton High Street.

It was an instant success and to date has helped over 200 students with focus on helping primary and secondary school age children improve or extend their learning.

But then came coronavirus and all face to face teaching, like so much, had to stop.

It was a blow to the Centre's Director Sarah Richards who, after a 15 year teaching career in Somerset and B&NES, with five years at Norton Hill School, was passionate about helping young people achieve their best.

But while the dedicated learning environment on the High Street has been shuttered - the teaching has very much carried on.

Sarah said: " Luckily, we already had an online service for distant students and given that they already help students from a wide area - from Peasedown St John down to Street, and from Wells across to Frome.

" We very quickly helped families successfully set up online learning and we have still seen great outcomes through remote tuition. Students get immediate help with their work, I mark the students' work on their screen and give them quality feedback to help them make progress.

"I've been delighted to help these young people have regular positive social interactions over the past three months, and I've really enjoyed it, too. Parents have said how reassuring it is for them to know we are supporting their child's English and maths, ensuring that they don't fall behind while the schools have been closed. This boost to my students' skills and confidence will help them greatly when they return to school in September."

Sarah added: " We will be continuing with our online tuition over the summer but we can't wait to see our students again when we reopen in September. Until then we'd like to give a big "Thank you!" to our schools' teachers, and the key workers who have helped us all through the past few months. See you soon."
