Midsomer Norton Town Council has elected a new mayor.

The usual protocol is that the deputy mayor takes over the post, but the current deputy, Steve Plumley, told the on line meeting that he did not want to become full mayor.

He told councillors. " I was four years as deputy under the former mayor Paul (Meyers). I was happy to help to advise when the new mayor took over because I had attended many meetings with him so I knew what the job was. But I do not want to become mayor."

He also added: " It is going to be a very strange time under coronavirus anyway. So it will not be the usual way of being mayor."

When he made his announcement, the councillors were asked if anyone else would be interested in taking on the post.

Councillors proposed Lynda Robertson, who said that she would need help to get to know the procedures and what was needed in the role.

Steve Plumley agreed to stay as her deputy for another year with a view to her being in post for the next two years and appointing a new deputy to get to know what the role entails, in a year's time.

Lynda told the on line meeting: " I hope I will do a good job. Thank you", to which councillors replied: " I am sure you will be great."
