Get ready for spring with Seedy Saturday this coming weekend in Timsbury

By Susie Watkins 9th Mar 2022

Seedy Saturday returns on Saturday 12 March 2022, at Timsbury Conygre Hall between 10am and 2pm.

The seed and spud spectacular offers growers at all stages and ages a fun and practical way to exchange seeds and tips; buy local products; and get involved in community activities.

The focus of the event is the seed swap where visitors are encouraged to bring some of their home-grown seeds and leave them for others to browse while taking something new home to try. This often includes heritage varieties that haven't been in commercial production for years such as Veitch's Pea, or localised varieties developed through the selection of seed over many years to produce a truly unique variety like the Farmborough Bean.

Now in its 12th year, this community event has stalls selling seeds and potatoes alongside spring bulbs, fruit bushes and trees, cottage perennials, herbs, plus homemade produce, local crafts, plant-based

products and gifts. There will also be expert talks and advice about weeds, herbs, community forest gardens, seed saving, and composting, fun family activities, and the kitchen café providing refreshments

and delicious homemade treats.

Event organiser, Sam Ross said : "Between 300 and 500 people attend every year, not just from the local area but many parts of the UK as well as Europe. This event marks the start of the growing season

for seed swappers, amateur gardeners, allotment-holders, horticulturalists, and anyone passionate about nature and the environment. "The friendly, local and sustainable ethos encourages everyone to have fun growing plants, alongside saving and sharing seeds and stories with friends and neighbours." Seedy Saturday is run by a small group of local and dedicated volunteers and is sponsored by Pennard Plants and Beans and Herbs. Entry to Seedy Saturday is just £1, with children under 16 free.
