UP CLOSE : The Midsomer Norton company with high ambitions and a world-class client base
Tucked away in a corner of the Westfield Industrial Estate is a company which many, including Nub News, had never heard of. But we, like millions of others, have actually seen them in action.
MMA Architectural Systems Ltd based on Fourth Avenue, is doing remarkable things in the world of infrastructure; from installing world class safety enclosures, protecting some of the UK's most popular tourist attractions, to designing stunning, and energy efficient, green walls.
The company was recently awarded a green grant itself, and the Metro Mayor visited their offices.
From its 650 m² offices and distribution centre on the Westfield Industrial Estate, the company has made waves with their green walls, one of which can be seen on student accommodation in Bath, but the biggest part of their business is a versatile protective stainless steel wire mesh system.
Co-owner and Director, Justin Errington, talked about just some of the projects the company has been involved in: "We've worked with architects and contractors on some incredible projects in the UK. From enclosing play areas on school roofs to providing around 5 kilometres of balustrade for London's 2012 Olympic park, a green wall for the most expensive residential flats in the UK and ensuring the security of the Ravens at the Tower of London, our projects could scarcely be more diverse.
"We even supplied wire ropes around Wembley Stadium to help prevent fans entering the pitch and provided hundreds of square metres of our stainless steel wire mesh system, to the inland surfing venue, The Wave in Bristol.
"We get huge satisfaction from every project we deliver, but perhaps the most rewarding are the suicide prevention schemes we've worked on, where Webnet installation at car parks and bridges acts as a deterrent to suicide attempts."
Co-owner and Director (and Justin's sister), Nikki Errington said that the company has now made its own commitment to energy conservation, with new energy efficient doors and windows. She told Nub News : "For us having new windows and doors not only means that we are saving energy, which is estimated at a carbon reduction of one tonne a year, but the office environment is also better, we don't get any drafts anymore and everyone is a lot more comfortable. It is a win, win, win and we will save money in the long run. "Whilst we have only had the windows and doors installed for about seven weeks, I can see that in just one month we had a 25% saving on our electricity bill compared to the same month in previous years." Which is also the case of the company's green walls - they too are a win win; they insulate the building, so save energy costs, they green-up the local environment, improving air quality and they make buildings look more attractive. Nikki, who is a trained materials engineer said: "With respect to our green walls, we definitely had a big uptake back when green issues started to come to the fore - and of course sustainability is hugely important with all our customers, whether they be homeowners or architects looking at multi-million pound developments. "Now we are finding that councils are specifying that developers incorporate green walls in their buildings, so they become an integral part of their building plans. They insist on green walls to make the buildings more environmentally friendly." Which is all good news for the Westfield company, which Justin and Nikki bought in 2007 and which has since grown to employ nine people. - Webnet is a multipurpose system, not just for animal enclosures or balustrade infill, but also safety netting for carpark openings, greening structures for climbing plants, and such things as anti-suicide/anti-fall nets for bridges.
