A new £5 billion grant scheme for High Street businesses in England aims to "get the tills ringing again", the Chancellor Rishi Sunak says.

Ahead of tomorrow's Budget, the chancellor said the grants, worth up to £18,000 per firm, will help shops and pubs reopen as England eases lockdown.

The one-off payment has yet to be confirmed as on social media there has been widespread debate about the future of Midsomer Norton High Street.

One comment on social media posted : " Our High Street has gone down hill in the last 10 years, we still have no retail shops and and nowhere for teenagers to go. B&NES is only interested in Bath centre. (We don't want) monies allocated to unwanted council Town Halls and a pedestrian area we don't need. "

One other possibility being considered by The Chancellor is to extend the business rates holiday - brought in last year to support shops - beyond its current end date of 31 March.
