This week, top epidemiologist and government adviser, Professor Neil Ferguson, told the media that the spread of coronavirus is showing early signs of slowing in the United Kingdom (UK).

The reduction in hospital admittances is, according to Professor Ferguson, as a result of the lockdown measures that have been implemented in recent weeks. What this tells us is that by working at home, going out for only essential reasons and social distancing by at least six feet we are starting to take better control of this situation, allowing the NHS to treat those in need.

In China, where the pandemic started, drastic action was taken to prevent the proliferation of Covid-19 and this is now beginning to be lifted. This must be the hope here. The effect on businesses is extremely difficult and not everyone is caught by the safety net. We can get back to normal sooner if the spread of the virus has clearly turned down and this will be aided if people co-operate with the government guidelines. Ultimately, it needs public support rather than tough enforcement for we are a society based on consent.

In this regard, although there is some light at the end of the tunnel we are not out of the woods yet. As the coronavirus continues to spread and people continue to die, it has never been more important to observe the information issued by the Prime Minister and his specialist team of Ministers and advisers. So please, stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.
