IN PICTURES: But mystery still surrounds who owns the Miners' Pool

By Susie Watkins 17th Aug 2020

In spite of a media campaign by Nub News it seems no more clear who is the owner of the local Miners' Pool.

As you can see the pool is still used for swimming, but it needs some major work to maintain the site and that can't really happen while no one is sure who owns the land.

The group of volunteers who currently keep the site cleared would love to know the owner so that they could ensure that it is protected.

You can read the original story of the pool here : the Nub News story

Two possible names have been put forward. One was that a farmer named Stanton owned the land where there was once a changing room for local school children who used the pool for lessons. That comment was from a reader who remembered using the pool back in 1939.

One other suggestion came from a former reporter who had also written a piece trying to establish who owned the land which is close to the local church.

They were told anecdotally that the land was owned by Earl Waldegrave who owned and continues to own a lot of land around St Nicholas.

Thank you for Sally Camac Bailey for the old photos of the pool in use.
