IN PICTURES : The last day of trading for the current Radco

By Susie Watkins 22nd Aug 2020

The Radco superstore in Radstock shuts its doors today August 22 at 5pm.

The shop will be re-opening in a smaller temporary location within Radstock, as the site is demolished and work begins on a development project which is expected to take five years to complete.

Radstock is at the heart of the Co-op story:

In March 1868: Meeting at the Workingman's Hall, Radstock, a group of members established the Radstock Co-operative and Industrial Society.

In 1877 that Society starts trading from a new purpose built store at 3 Wells Road, Radstock, which is the location of the current head office.

In 1908 the society opens a store at Peasdown St John and then in

1959 there is the formal opening of the Society's Radstock Superstore - or as it is always known, Radco.

In 1985 it was redeveloped and re-opened – and formally renamed Radco – by radio DJ David Hamilton.
