Magpie vintage only opened last October but already owner Kelly Copemen is making a huge splash on the Midsomer Norton shopping scene, and further afield.

Her shop is a real curiosity, jam-packed with all manner of fascinating pieces, pre-loved and new, and she recently sold an incredible retro dress to Australia.

Kelly is a former Somervale pupil and after leaving school went to UWE and studied Environmental Science. She then went to work locally for a printing ink manufacturer and then at Norton Hill school as part of the administration team for 16 years, but ill health forced her to stop two years ago.

Kelly said: " I started to recover and made jewelry to sell at craft fairs. I then moved on to vintage markets and events like retro car shows. I found I had a love for vintage and have always liked the weird and wonderful.

"Being concerned about our planet and local area I could see people were after something different and ethical without having to travel too far. Being a customer of Celia's Place Hair Salon in the High Street we saw the shop had been empty for a while, so made inquiries and Magpie was born."

It has been a labour of love, renovated by her friends Mike and his son, and supported by Celia, her mum and partner.

Magpie sells a little bit of everything – vintage, retro, alternative, military style, weird and whacky.

One amazing addition is Steampunk Shrunk !

The tiny company is based in a crumbly ancient cottage near the foot of Glastonbury Tor where broken jewellery, vintage watches, hardware and junk are lovingly upcycled into quirky and unique miniature items.

Jan, the tinkerer-in-chief said: "I love supplying Magpie. Trouble is, every time I come along to restock, I end up buying more of Kelly's treaures."

Magpie's pre loved dresses, shoes and accessories are sourced from donations, car boots, online, but she can also sell on commission.

Some of the more modern clothing and accessories are from brands such as Lindy Bop, Hell Bunny, Lambretta, Ben Sherman, Irregular Choice, Dr Marten. While most of her vintage clothing and accessories date from the 1960's, 1970's and 1980's.

There is also a selection of items from local artists and crafts people who rent shelves.

One special item sold recently was a genuine 1960's silk shift dress which went to Australia.

They also sell online through Ebay, Etsy and Depop.

Kelly said: " I want Magpie to be a place where people can come and browse the curiosities, pick up something unique and unusual, get that special outfit that no one else will have, all while recycling and not wasting resources. I also want people to feel like they can take their time, reminisce, and chill out here."

Open Wednesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm - ish.
