Next week's Midsomer Norton Town Council will be assessing whether a decision to pay for street marshalls

The council agreed to pay for two officers to be on patrol on specific dates. You could have seen them on December 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 26th, 29th, 30th and 31st, and working from 10pm - 3 am.

The cost was put at about £2,000 from Orbital Facilities.

The decision to end the contract for street marshalls on the High Street has been widely criticised for making the area less safe late at night.

At a council meeting earlier last year, Cllr Sean Hughes who runs Fat Sams night club in Midsomer Norton said: " Getting rid of Street Marshalls is a mistake. Because of shift patterns you rarely see a PCSO, so that just leaves CCTV. That is in Bath and is only checked if Street Marshalls (or police officers) call them to monitor it, so CCTV is useless as well.

" Two years ago most of our councils pledged to make our streets safer.. this is a retrograde step. Our High Street has the worst security for a number of years. There are incidents every week which Street Marshalls take care of. I seriously hope there are not any serious incidents that occur which could have been prevented by the presence of Street Marshalls."

On their meeting on January 8, the council will be asking whether they made a marked difference. Details on the meeting and the agenda items can be found the Midsomer Norton Town Council web site with the meeting open to all from 7pm at The Hollies
