Selling at the Somerset Farmers Market in Frome for the first time, an highly unusual food.

Goat meat sausages, and the farmer who breeds the special herd, was keen to tell us how it is considered less fatty, healthier and lower in cholesterol than any other sausage, including chicken sausages.

Lallybroch Goat farm from Midsomer Norton breeds pure Boer goats which are specifically bred for the quality of their lower fat meat.

Owner Mike Stenner told Nub News: " The pedigree of these goats can be traced back to the beginning of the herd book. Whereas British goats are mixed.

" The meat has to be experienced because it is difficult to explain, sometimes it can give the impression of tasting a bit like lamb, sometimes it can give you the impression of being like beef. It is a much richer and heavier animal than the milk goat.

" In terms of health it is better for you than pork, beef, lamb or even chicken. (Based on American food tests). They compared the different aspects of all the meats by cooking them in the same way and analysing the output. It is not that common to have goat meat."

The stall saw slow but steady sales of the meat and sausages with many visitors intrigued to try the taste. Nub News also bought a pack of sausages and we did find that there was virtually no grease came out from cooking.

So how rare is a goat farmed for meat in the UK.

The farmer explained: " When you talk about herds of sheep, they are in the millions but goats can be counted in the thousands. But it is a growing industry and so one day we might have as many goats as sheep."
