The latest Ofsted report into St Benedict's Catholic Primary School on Charlton Lane in Midsomer Norton has said it needs to be improved in terms of education and early years provision.

The report, published June 27, rates the school Good in all other areas but the two improvement needed grades bring down its overall ranking.

The inspectors praised the school for being warm and friendly but then followed with criticism of teachers not meeting the needs of all pupils, including those with special needs.

The wrote : " Pupils behave well. Low-level disruption is rare in lessons. Children in Reception quickly learn how to share and play well together. Older pupils enjoy helping younger pupils during breaktimes. In many areas of the curriculum, pupils show highly positive attitudes to their learning. However, the curriculum in some subjects is not yet meeting the needs of all pupils. In these subjects, pupils can lose focus and attention and take less care with their work. "

They add that pupils feel safe and happy and there have been improvements at the senior leadership level at the school

However St Benedicts needs, in the words of the report to aim higher in terms of expectations : " Teachers have low expectations of pupils' writing. As a result, pupils, including children in the early years, do not achieve well. Leaders must improve teachers' subject knowledge, so that teachers have much higher expectations of what pupils can achieve in their writing. "
