The age old tradition of wassailing came to Midsomer Norton today (February 4) with a colourful parade of sorcerers, quacks and bonnets for the youngsters.

Of particular interest, and seemingly very popular, the chance for youngsters to assemble bird boxes which will be place in the Town Park.

Miriam Woolnough of Somer Valley Rediscovered (a partnership project between B&NES and the council) were leading the box making and overseeing some enthusiastic hammering. " We are a project about nature and nature recovery and these boxes once finished will go up in the park. "

The Rediscovered project area includes Radstock, Midsomer Norton and Westfield, the large villages of Paulton and Peasedown St John and surrounding countryside and aims to re-connect people to their local greenspaces.

The Langport Mummers then led a noisy procession into that park to perform the St George play.

Mumming is a traditional colourful piece of entertainment that has been around for over 300 years while the banging of pots and pans for a wassail should bring good luck to Midsomer, and ensure a bountiful harvest.

Let's hope so.
