Martyn Plant. Nominee for Midsomer Norton Town Council.

My name is Martyn Plant, and I have lived in Midsomer Norton since 2007, when I was appointed Head of Art at Norton Hill School. After 11 years, I moved to Fosse Way School, where I still teach full time.

My family and I were immediately and warmly welcomed into the community, becoming involved in many local groups and organisations, activities and events. We soon recognised the community spirit and friendliness of the Town and its residents.

I feel fortunate to have been able to organise a variety of events for the community over several years, including music performances, art exhibitions, charity events, drama & theatre productions, and an annual Arts Festival. In recent years, as a trustee of the Community Trust, I helped organise the Town Fayre, Jubilee Celebrations and other Arts and community events.

I have always aimed to bring exciting experiences to the Town, and give a platform for local residents to share their skills and interests. This has also enabled me to experience the variety of community groups, volunteers, activities and individual talents in the area.

I felt privileged to be voted onto the Town Council towards the end of 2022, and learnt much about the way it functions and the many issues to be tackled. I am keen to use the knowledge and connections I have, and my enthusiasm and passion for this town and it's residents, to help continue the development and improvement of Midsomer Norton, balancing the rich heritage with a modern and forward-thinking approach. Midsomer Norton is a great place to live, primarily because of the people that live here. It has many wonderful assets and great potential, which we as a community can develop and realise if we work together.

Some of the most important issues I would like to see the Town Council address are

·      A visible and accountable Town Council, that communicates with residents and consults effectively

·      Encouragement and support for businesses, particularly around the high street

·      A clear plan for the continued development of our town, built on residents' priorities

·      Effective youth services and support, for our children and young people

·      Creating a safe and vibrant place to live, full of opportunities and positive experiences
