Opportunity for Midsomer Norton artists in an international competition
A call-out to artists in the Midsomer Norton area: there is a special prize available to Somerset artists at this year's Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) open art competition.
The exhibition of shortlisted works will be held at Wells Cathedral, from 11 July until 9 August.
With an anticipated footfall of 25,000 through the Cathedral during the exhibition dates, and some potentially career-changing prizes, this is an amazing opportunity for any artist. But Somerset artists have an extra incentive this year: the charity and arts organisation, Somerset Art Works (SAW), has come on board and will be presenting a special award, the Somerset Art Works Festival 2021 Award, to a selected Somerset-based artist. The winner will receive mentoring from the experienced SAW team along with financial support to create a new body of work which will be showcased during the Somerset Art Works Festival 2021. "We are really excited to be involved with WAC," explains Carol Carey, SAW Creative Director. "It is so important for art organisations to work together to ensure an enriched cultural offering for the whole county." The award will be open to Somerset-based artists working in all mediums, including new media, installation, moving-image, sound, live performance and socially engaged practice. "The opportunity to provide an award through our Artist Development Programme fits beautifully with our aim to support, develop and nurture Somerset-based creatives," continues Carol. Last year's exhibition of shortlisted works included 98 pieces selected from an overall submission of 1,800 entries. It was curated throughout the whole Cathedral, including 13 additional fine art site specific installations. "We would love to see an increase in the number of local shortlisted artists," says Paddy O'Hagan, chair of WAC. "It would be great to celebrate the wealth of artistic talent that we have in the county in this iconic Somerset building." The deadline for this year's submissions is Thursday 16 April. The competition is open to artists over the age of 18. Up to four works may be entered and the entry fee is £15 per work for the exhibition and £20 per work for the Installation.
