Out of its depth : Midsomer Norton Town Council told it must hit the budget rules before any council tax agreement

Midsomer Norton residents remain in the dark about what the latest council tax rise will be as the row over the budget, and what cuts have or will be made, continues to rumble.
Councillors have agreed in principle for an eight per cent increase details HERE but that supposes proposed cuts in a budget which has yet to Nub News knowledge been agreed, are put in place.
It has been pointed out to Nub News that budgeting for the improvement for things like the Wellow Brook walk is set at less than half than one of the estimated projected costs of work. One estimate of the council savings that will need to be put in to make the eight per cent increase in the precept add up amount to close to £7,000.
Cllr Hughes of B&NES has been critical of the workings of the Town Council saying : " The recent resignation of the town clerks seems to have exposed issues with the Town Councillors who without the correct guidance look completely out of their depth, choosing to ignore the rules and vote for a precept without any supporting budget whatsoever. "
According to both The Local Government Finance act 1992 and The Good Councillor Guide on finance and transparency 2017:
He added: " Clearly this raises concern and I have asked the BANES monitoring officer to review in the interest of residents to ensure that tax raising decisions taken by this Town Council are carefully considered and within the regulations. "
Nub News is still waiting for a response to this review.
