Peasedown children take part in Summer Reading Challenge at local library

Local News by Susie Watkins 14th Sep 2021

Children living in Peasedown St John had the opportunity to take part in a Summer Reading Challenge during the school holidays.

Run by B&NES Council's Library Services, children across the local authority could take books out from their local library, and when they did, they'd automatically be entered into the challenge.

Peasedown Community Library Operations Manager and local councillor, Karen Walker, said: "The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun as well as helping to prevent the summer reading 'dip'.

This year's Summer Reading Challenge theme was Wild World Heroes, created in partnership with WWF and illustrated by award-winning children's author and illustrator Heath McKenzie.

The Challenge inspired children to explore ways of helping to save the planet, with a focus on taking action for nature and tackling real-world environmental issues, from plastic pollution and deforestation to wildlife decline and nature loss."

Last Saturday morning, children in Peasedown St John who successfully took part in the challenge were invited to visit the village's community library to collect their medals and certificates.

Gavin Heathcote, Chairman of the Peasedown Community Trust, added: "Congratulations to Erin and Robert and the other children who took part from Peasedown St John. Reading is an essential life skill, so encouraging our youngsters to read from a young age, for fun, is important.

We've got a huge selection of children's books at the library, so even though the Summer Reading Challenge is over we look forward to seeing children and their parents visit us again soon."
