Scores of friends, along with the family of Charley Bates and the wider community were at a special event on Saturday to honour the murdered teenager.

On what would have been his 18th birthday they set alight a memorial to mark the death of the popular youngster and, organisers hoped, start to heal.

Little Lost Robot were behind the event at the Radstock Youth Centre and SWALLOW Community Cafe, drawing together the communities of Bath and North East Somerset in a collective process of remembrance following the tragic loss of life as a result of knife crime in the region this year. Charley Bates was the focus of the commemorative event, with the community creating a large shrine to the teenager which was then set alight.

Artworks, notes and other memories were then put into the dome which was set alight at sunset.

It was described as a one-of-a-kind memorial 'temple', which organisers hoped could mark the rebirth, recovery and regeneration of the whole community.

Co-Director of Little Lost Robot Ruby Sant said ahead of the evening: "Memento is a safe space to show respect for ourselves, each other and our community - what it has been, what it is now and what it can become in the future, in a kind, compassionate and healing way."
