Barnacle Bill's, considered by many to be the best fish and chip shop in Frome is shutting up - immediately - due to spiralling costs.

The shop, and sit down restaurant at the cop of Church Street Frome has been frying delicious meals for the past nine years.

In a social media post the owner said: " It is with a very heavy heart that I have to tell you that with immediate effect I will be closing the doors to Barnacle Bill's.

This has not been a decision taken lightly. Due to the spiralling costs and the foreseeable rising costs, it is no longer viable for me to continue trading."

Warnings about fish and chip shops closing have been in the media all week - with the price of fish AND huge costs in terms of cooking, pushing many to the brink.

The price of Norwegian wholesale frozen cod increased to £3.94 per kg in March, compared with £3.35 in December and £2.52 in March 2021, according to Mintec.

About 40% of the UK and EU's white fish comes from Russian boats, which are currently facing sanctions due to the war.
