A local man who is bidding to become our area's next MP has backed the campaign to keep parking free in both Midsomer Norton and Radstock.

Cllr Gavin Heathcote, who will stand as the Independent candidate in this year's General Election for the brand-new Frome and East Somerset Constituency, says the introduction of paid parking would be 'catastrophic' for local businesses.

Gavin said:

"At a time when our High Streets, particularly small independent businesses, need more support than ever before B&NES Council's plan to start charging for parking would be an absolute nightmare.

Businesses are struggling enough as it is due to the rise in the cost of goods, fewer people using local services and the attraction and ease of online shopping.

The introduction of parking charges in council car parks in Midsomer Norton and Radstock would see fewer people shopping locally and high street shops struggling more.

I urge B&NES Council to think again and abandon their plans to damage the retail sector even further."

As part of its plan to 'balance the books', Bath & North East Somerset Council is looking to introduce parking charges in their car parks in both towns – which have always been free for shoppers to use.

Cllr Gavin Heathcote, who also serves as a local charity director, says support for small independent businesses is one of his Five Priorities:

"There needs to be help made available by both national and local government to support small businesses who are being priced out by larger companies. We're slowly seeing the death of the High Street due to poor decision making from establishment politicians.

A new way of doing things would be a breath of fresh air for us all!"
