Radstock firefighters to host an open morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support

On Saturday 20th November, firefighters at Radstock fire station will welcome the community for a morning of coffee, cake and conversation.

The event will offer the community a chance to visit their local fire station and meet the team of firefighters that serve them, all while raising all important funds for Macmillan.

Radstock fire station has been serving the community for many years and is located on Wells Road. During the event, firefighters will demonstrate a road traffic collision extrication as well as offering a range of homemade bakes. A recruitment team from Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) will be in attendance too, to talk to the community about what they could achieve as a retained firefighter.

On-call firefighters (sometimes called 'retained') are an important part of the AF&RS team, serving local communities and providing a reliable response. On-Call firefighters respond to fires and emergency calls using the same appliances and equipment as wholetime firefighters; the difference is that On-Call firefighters respond from their homes or workplaces rather than a fire station.

Emily Kingman, an on-call firefighter, organised the event after her family was affected by cancer and Macmillan Cancer Support provided "fantastic support during some of the worst times in our lives."

Emily said: "Macmillan give comfort, empathy and shoulder to lean on during life's worst events. They support the person that has cancer as well as their family and the nurses are fantastic."

When asked why she wanted to run this event, Emily added: "I want to arrange this event in my community and raise funds to support the nurses who have helped members of my family this year. It's time we brought the community together over some coffee and cake after the most pressured times all the emergency services and NHS staff have been through."

To donate to Emily's fundraiser, you can bring cash to the event on the day, or donate via her JustGiving page HERE: Every pound goes to a good cause.
