Radstock MP Jacob Rees Mogg updates constituents on the resettlement of those who escaped the Taliban
Jacob Rees Mogg MP writes:
This week, the Minister for Justice and Afghan Resettlement wrote to all Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding the Government's efforts to help all those who have managed to flee the Taliban.
During the initial two weeks of evacuation, our armed forces, diplomats and civil servants worked hard to fly around 15,000 people to safety in the United Kingdom (UK). Since then, the Government has offered sanctuary, food, healthcare, schooling and support to thousands of Afghan people across the country. The Home Office has moved circa 11,000 people into hotels on a full-board basis, issued cash cards ('Aspen cards') to help with costs and placed Hotel Liaison Officers in each hotel to provide information and support.Ministry of Defence (MoD) personnel have visited every bridging hotel and conducted induction interviews with the thousands of residents to confirm their language capabilities, professional skills and qualifications as well as their education, health and other requirements.
Through local Job Centres and work coaches, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has set up operations to complete Universal Credit claims, issue thousands of National Insurance Numbers and hold Jobs Fairs to facilitate employment with around 200 people already having been offered jobs.
The Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) is also working with the NHS and local health services to register people with GPs, distribute NHS numbers, give vaccines and provide trauma informed care. The majority of children are in school or in the process of being placed in school owing to the hard work and efficiency shown by schools, councils and the Department for Education (DfE).
The Government is going to great lengths to ensure that those who have sought refuge here are well taken care of, are given the option to work, are schooled and fed and I am proud of the measures already taken to help the Afghan people who were forced to leave their homes in such a sudden and traumatic manner.
