He writes: On Monday, the Prime Minister issued a statement in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

During his speech, Boris Johnson warned the public to avoid non-essential contact and travel to curtail the highly contagious virus. People are advised to work from home where possible, take every precaution when using public transport and stay away from mass gatherings, pubs and restaurants.

As the death toll rises the Prime Minister's seemingly draconian advice is necessary to prevent serious illness and in some cases, death. Those who would be most detrimentally affected have underlying health conditions or are elderly and as a nation, we have a responsibility to protect the most vulnerable.

This is the worst health crisis to occur in our lifetime but by working together it is surmountable. If you have a cough or temperature it is imperative to self-isolate and look up the detailed advice on the NHS website. Those who are in the same household should also self-isolate.

In response to this global crisis, the Chancellor has unveiled a £330 billion package to protect the UK economy and jobs. Some measures include a business rates 'holiday' for firms with fewer than 250 employees, mortgage support, loans for businesses and the refunding of sick pay for small businesses. This followed the Bank of England's announcement to cut interest rates from 0.75% to 0.25%. In addition, the NHS has cancelled all non-urgent surgery to ensure that more beds are available to those struck down by Covid-19.
