A great selection of local beers and ciders was more than enough to make up for some inclement weather for the first day of the Somerset & Dorset Railway's Real Ale Festival on Saturday 22nd.
Pints were available in the specially adapted carriage featuring over twelve choices including ciders from Lilley's and Chant, Glastonbury Ales Hedge Monkey, a session bitter from the Wriggle Valley Brewery, a stout from Plain Ales and a coupe of bonus beers from the CronX brewery in London.
Guests had the option of refreshments on the buffet carriage in between enjoying the two mile round-trip on the restored section of track of this famous heritage line.
Travelling in the Station's Diesel Multiple Unit, locals and tourists visiting Midsomer Norton were treated to a unique view over the valley as the train worked its way up the substantial incline as far as the Chilcompton infill.
In addition to many scheduled train services over the coming weeks, the station has two evenings entertainment planned for the 5th and 19th August featuring live music from the Blue Moon Band and On the Edge Swing Band respectively. Tickets are available to book on the station's website sdjr.co.uk
Attending the Saturday session of the Festival, the Mayor of Midsomer Norton, Cllr Gordon Mackay took the opportunity to catch up with the Chairman Stephen Lacey over a few pints. "What they have achieved here at the S&D is quite outstanding. When you think of all the things Midsomer Norton has to offer, it's easy to forget we also have a functioning heritage railway with great catering facilities, a museum, shop and several great events throughout the year."
