The Co-op supermarket, which has a shop in Radstock will be ending use-by dates on its own-brand yoghurt in an effort to cut food waste.

The labels will instead have a best before date, with consumers encouraged to do a sniff test to see if the product is still good to eat with the company's food technicians saying that yogurt is itself preserved milk.

Co-op estimate that six million people in the UK eat a yoghurt daily but research from recycling charity Wrap shows half of yoghurts are thrown away unopened, mainly because they were not eaten before the recommended date.

Researchers say that yogurt is safe to eat within one to two weeks of any expiry date.

Meantime the intimate health brand INTIMINA has conducted a survey to find out how aware people are of their ecological contribution to world waste when it comes to menstrual products.

The results reveal that more and more people are jumping on the bandwagon of sustainability when it comes to managing their periods.

Key stats include:

  • 63% of people have switched to using reusable menstrual products.
  • When purchasing and using menstrual products, 59% of people consider the effects on the environment and the amount of menstrual waste these products represent.
  • 42% have tried eco-friendly menstrual products.
  • Nearly half (48%) favour the menstrual cup because it saves money long term.

Earth Day, an international event to demonstrate support for environmental protection was first held on April 22, 1970.
