The scaffolding around the iconic Radstock wheel, alongside the mining museum, came adrift last night.

As this photo taken by local resident Rob Opie at midnight last night (March 12) shows, the scaffolding, put in place to renovate the wheel, came away in dramatic fashion.

The fire service were called to the area to re-secure the scaffold, but many residents have questioned the safety of the installation.

One comment on social media questioned whether there have been corners cut, and asked: " Where's the fencing to stop people playing on it and potentially getting seriously hurt?"

The clean up and re paint of the wheel in Radstock only began on March 10.
