Last week, children at Shoscombe Church School dedicated the whole week to looking at green energy, healthy eating, biodiversity and outdoor learning.
As part of a 'Hopes and Dreams for a Better World' Theme Week, children took part in a range of thought-provoking activities to encourage them to think about the future and lifestyle.
School Headteacher, Ruth Noall, said: "Thanks to all the children, staff, and outside speakers who took part in this special week. Encouraging pupils to think about how our lifestyle affects the wider world around us is important.
"From the type of car we drive to what we eat, and from how we look after animals to how we express our emotions – all of these have a link to the world around us."
Here is a glimpse at some of the activities Shoscombe School Children took part in last week:
Gas-guzzling or Electric?
Local car dealership Mercedes brought two cars into school to help the children consider the pros and cons of petrol and diesel cars versus electric cars. Whilst the V8 engine was impressive to look at and listen to, the children were able to consider the impact of this car on the environment and compare this to their latest electric car model.
Vegan Cooking
Children enjoyed a cooking demonstration by Richard Buckley - Head Chef at Oak Restaurant in Bath. The children learnt how chocolate is produced from cocoa beans and tasted vegan chocolate buttons before sampling the vegan chocolate brownie they had watched being made.Bee Keeping
Katrina Kelly spoke to children about the process of keeping bees and why bees are important to our planet. Children were able to learn how honey is produced whilst also learning how to look after bees and encourage more bees into our gardens.Biodiversity in Shoscombe and the RSPB
Helen Chapman joined children virtually for a talk about birds in the local area and the work of the RSPB. Angelina Lewis visited from the Shoscombe Community Village Forum to talk to the children about biodiversity and Swifts in Shoscombe.Expressing ourselves through art
Throughout the week children were able to express their hopes and dreams through art. In particular, children have used stencils to make bunting, placards and tote bags showing bees, Banksy rats and Arctic bears.School allotment and outdoor learning
Every day of the week children took part in a variety of outdoor learning opportunities. Children in key stage 2 spent time on the school allotment and cleared weeds and planted up the raised beds. Children in key stage 1 went on welly walks and visited a local farm.
Journaling
As an ongoing record of thoughts and ideas, all children were issued with a special Building a Better World journal. This journal, made from 100% recycled materials, will be added to by children over the next three years as part of the school's Erasmus project.
