A deathly speeding site with a tragedy just waiting to happen - that is the view of a Midsomer Norton councillor who is urging action before someone is killed.

Residents around Withies Way In Midsomer have been trying to get speed reduction measures put in and around their estate with the developer saying it was down to the council and B&NES allegedly refusing to put speed bumps within a residential area.

The campaign for improved safety is being led by a local councillor who before the road on this development was adopted by B&NES, personally offered to pay for the installation of speed reducing measures.

He was told by David Wilson Homes that this would not be allowed as it would prevent B&NES taking ownership of the road and then in turn them saying they do not consider such measures on a residential estate.

As residents we see several near-misses like this every day!

Cllr Mackay who sent us the video said: " Thankfully, on this occasion no pedestrian was present but I believe the damage to one of the cars was substantial. If a child had been running or cycling in the vicinity, they would likely have been killed. "

B&NES have speed bumps at the entrance to the Midsomer Norton Recycling Centre along with 5mph signs. Sainsbury's in Midsomer Norton have restrictive speed bumps too.

He added: " I cannot make this any more clear: THIS DEVELOPMENT HAS NO DESIGNATED PAVEMENTS SO THE HIGHWAY MUST BE MADE SAFE FOR ALL WHO USE IT. "

He is demanding a meeting with B&NES Highways and is asking for

  • Installation of 5mph speed bumps at several strategic locations around the development, especially blind corners.
  • A traffic radar will be installed on the entrance to the estate indicating the speed of traffic so drivers are warned they are exceeding an appropriate speed.

He added : " If B&NES will not agree to the urgent installation of these life-saving speed reduction measures, I need to know which person, specifically, is preventing these essential works.

" It is that person who will have blood on their hands. I can only hope the necessary measures are implemented before the next video shows a child being killed and I'm forced to update the social media to reflect the culpability of that individual as well as the B&NES Planning and Highways Departments. People talk about an accident waiting to happen; WE WILL NOT STAND BY AND WAIT UNTIL ONE OF OUR CHILDREN ARE KILLED DUE TO B&NES INACTION ON THIS MATTER"
