A Somerset social enterprise set up in the wake of the first national lockdown last Spring has donated over £2,000 to good causes.

Somerset Face Masks was founded to ensure businesses, schools and charities across the county had access to affordable, reusable face masks throughout the pandemic.

Its community partnership scheme has been a big hit with well over 1,000 face masks sold through local projects and businesses such as the Peasedown St John Community Library and Essence Café in Midsomer Norton.

Nathan Hartley, Founder of Somerset Face Masks, said:

"Over the last year, many businesses and charities have struggled to get back onto their feet due to the extortionate costs of PPE equipment that large corporations are charging. To keep the public safe and to adhere to Covid guidelines, organisations have legally needed to attain PPE – but were given little help to pay for it."

Last year, recognising the need to provide an affordable supply of masks, Somerset Face Masks was set up.

The social enterprise sold masks at £2.50 each and provided a free delivery service to anyone who placed an order in Somerset, B&NES or Wiltshire.

Keeping its own operating costs to a minimum, the initiative has now been able to donate it profits raised to good causes, with £600 being awarded to the Community Library in Peasedown St John to help with running costs. A further £1,600 was gifted to free food distribution networks to support those who were shielding during the pandemic.

"I'd like to thank everyone who has volunteered with us over the last year", said Nathan. "Your encouragement has enabled us to support our community at a time when it's needed help the most."

Somerset Face Masks has a limited supply of stock left with masks available at a reduced price of just £1 each. If any organisations or charities would like to purchase a batch, please email [email protected]
