An online debate prompted by a News Nub article, highlighting a failed review of Youth Services in Midsomer Norton, has generated a number of suggestions for how youth provision in the town could be improved in the future.
Last week News Nub broke the news that a review of what was being done for younger residents, proposed by Midsomer Norton Town Council in November 2022, had never been completed.
The story prompted a statement on social media from the Mayor, Cllr Gordon Mackay, stating that "Midsomer Norton Town Council are now budgeting £35,000 for youth provision. This includes an extra £10,000 a year towards providing a new youth night to be delivered in conjunction with Midsomer Norton Community Trust and Youth Connect South West", going on to describe how "the Town Council is committing more than ever to our town's youth".
Taking into account inflation, the current level of funding matches the £32,500 requested by the Community Trust for a Midsomer Norton Youth Programme, in September 2022.
In his Facebook post, Cllr Mackay invited "any suggestions for making the youth-night the success everyone wants it to be", prompting a lively discussion from contributors.
Suggestions included: a permanent youth club by the skate park, table tennis and pool tables, chairs and settees, a youth cinema night, table football, a roller disco and an indoor skate park.
Once the Mayor has reported these suggestions back to Midsomer Norton Town Council, Nub will update readers on how these ideas are being taken forward.
The Mayors post can be found on the MIDSOMER NORTON & RADSTOCK Social Club Facebook Group, it has not been posted on the Mayor of Midsomer Norton page.
