A new pop-up studio shop will today (October 15) be open at Farrington's Farm with locally crafted goods and a chance to see the work being created.

The Handloom Room is a small enterprise run by local hand-weaver Jade Ogden. Alongside selling her handwoven scarves and other crafts, Jade will be weaving in the shop on her table loom, giving you the opportunity to see the traditional craft in action.

Jade's most recent woven collection features local Shetland sheep's wool, sourced from Fernhill Farm on the Mendips. She weaves colourful tweeds through the undyed Shetland, to create a range of eye-catching and unique scarves and soft furnishings - and welcomes commissions too.

The ethos at the heart of The Handloom Room is 'craft with good provenance'. In addition to her own 'Locally Crafted' work, Jade will also showcase a range of other handcrafted products, under the strands of 'Artisan Crafted' and 'Socially Crafted'.

The Artisan Crafted range, features a selection of handwoven silk and cotton scarves from the rural region of Kutch, in Gujarat, India. These pieces have been purchased directly from the artisans, ensuring a fair price and transparent sourcing. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the artisans have had no work and no income. The Handloom Room is working to support them by bringing you the opportunity to not only purchase a beautiful piece of heritage textile, but also to support the livelihoods of these artisans and their families directly.

The Socially Crafted range showcases a collection of fine crafts made by people working in supported workshops within social enterprises and community interest companies in the UK. Makers include people with learning disabilities and people recovering from mental health crises. Here you will find a fascinating array of wood, ceramic and textile ornaments, functional items for the home and accessories. Jade purchases directly from the organisations that support the makers, ensuring a fair price that enables the makers to continue to develop and flourish as craft practitioners.

Jade Ogden said: "I am so excited to be able to share this collection of completely unique textiles and craft at the lovely Farrington's Farm this autumn, while giving people an insight into the craft of hand-weaving at the same time."

Find the little studio shop near the entrance of the complex, to the left of the farm shop. The pop-up is open Thursdays to Saturdays 9.30am – 5pm up until Christmas.
