Dr Bruce Laurence, the director of Public Health for Bath & North East Somerset has put out a statement saying that there have been ten confirmed coronavirus cases across the region in the past seven days - with one reported in the last three days.

However this does not tally with the numbers on the government site - showing 18 cases in the last week.

Both numbers are comparatively low compared to other regions of the UK : According to the ONS site B&NES has 9 cases per 100,000 people in the latest week while an average across England is 16.

But Dr Laurence has warned residents not to be complacent.

In a newsletter across B&NES he wrote:

"It has been widely reported this week that the demand for Covid tests is greater than the ability of the system to provide them and this has led to terrible frustrations. It is a national problem. In Bath & North East Somerset the mobile testing unit at Odd Down Park and Ride is working and the site at Paulton will remain until September 21.

"It is important for me to stress that if you have not booked a test then you won't get one if you turn up at either test centre. Please remember that if you have any of the three main symptoms and can't get a test you have to assume and act as though you are positive and self-isolate with your household.

"With the schools and universities returning we could easily see further rising numbers in coming weeks. It's extremely important we protect staff and vulnerable residents in our care homes so please be extra careful not to visit if you have any possible symptoms or might have been in contact with someone who has tested positive.

With this in mind it is vital we continue to play our part, follow the law on the rule of six and follow social distancing rules, wash our hands regularly, wear a face covering where necessary and despite frustrations get tested if you have Covid symptoms. You must self-isolate rigorously if you have the illness or are identified as a contact. "
