At Midsomer Norton Town Council's monthly meeting there was surprise at details that the council is considering buying branded ties for councillors and staff - at a possible cost of close to £1,000.

The idea is to promote the council and its work, with those involved wearing Midsomer Norton branded items at events and meetings.

But Councillor Shaun Hughes argued that in these times of financial hardship, this kind of spending was not a good idea.

"When people are struggling to pay their mortgages or pay their bills, is this the right message to be sending? " he asked the meeting at The Hollies on October 3. " Why not make a big donation to the foodbank instead? "

In the agenda for the night, Cllr Gordon Mackay suggested purchasing ties and scarves for the councillors and office staff.

Quotes in the papers showed that customised ties and scarves could cost anywhere from £15.35 for a tie, and £22.35 for a scarf, with prices lower if the council bought in bulk.

One final costs for both ties and scarves came to £942.50.

Midsomer Norton Town Council agreed to discuss the proposal at a later time and report back to Cllr Hughes.
