The Midsomer Norton MP writes in his latest column:

This week, the Foreign Secretary wrote again to all Members of Parliament (MPs) with an update on the Government's response to the situation in Ukraine.

Liz Truss confirmed that a cross-Government strategy has been developed with three overarching objectives: 1. To provide protection and life-saving assistance of Ukrainians and neighbouring countries with a focus on women and children; 2. To work with our allies to ensure that the international humanitarian system delivers a well-coordinated and well-funded response, both within Ukraine and in supporting those fleeing the country and 3. To call out malign activity including violations of International Humanitarian Law and denials of humanitarian access. Since the invasion began, more than 2.8m refugees have been displaced from their homes. In response, the Home Secretary, Priti Patel, announced that from 15th March those who have a Ukrainian passport will be able to come to the United Kingdom (UK) without having to visit a Visa Application Centre to conduct biometric checks. Vital security checks will still continue but this will mean that those eligible can enter the UK via an online process. Individuals, charities, community groups and businesses can record their interest in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war through the new Homes for Ukraine scheme. The Government has, thus far, brought twenty-one Ukrainian children with cancer to the UK to receive care. This intervention is part of the Government's wider humanitarian response to the Ukraine conflict with £220 million having been donated and more than 650,000 medical items already delivered. In excess of 500 portable generators and spare parts will also be sent to power essential services, including hospitals and shelters. We will continue to support Ukraine and the region in any way that we can.
