Emergency repairs to the water main serving Chilcompton and Stratton on the Fosse left thousands of households without water today (January 27) for the whole day.

The work meant supplies cut off for much of the surrounding area and supplies of bottled water which were delivered to the Chilcompton football club ran out due to high demand.

The problem started with a burst main at Tape Lane in Gurney Slade. The company said that a large burst pipe in Maesbury affected multiple districts with customers either having low water pressure or no water at all.

Update : By late afternoon the repair was made and the mains water was restarted, but Bristol Water warned customers; " It may take a few hours for supplies to return to normal, If discolouration does occur please run your cold kitchen tap for up to 30 minutes to clear this. "
