Not a single stretch of river in the West of England is in 'good' overall health, according to a bombshell new report.

A probe by The Rivers Trust found the region's waterways are being poisoned by a vile cocktail of pollution from agriculture, the water industry and road runoff.

According to the report, 100% of river stretches in the West of England failed to meet 'good' overall status.

That includes Wellow Brook just off Radstock which has been classified as being in "poor" health, according to the environment charity.

Regional Mayor Dan Norris says the "shocking" report is a damning indictment of 14 years of government failure to clean up the nation's rivers and lakes, and that urgent action is needed.

He said he was doing everything he could at a region level to clean up the mess created by central government including funding a suspended floating plant system to help fish and rare eels at the new Capricorn Quay, as well as working with partners like the Bristol Avon Rivers Trust to reduce road runoff - a key driver of pollution in the West region, and nationwide, found by The Rivers Trust.

Dan Norris, Labour's West of England Metro Mayor, said: "Ministers have allowed our precious rivers to become sewage-infested messes.

"This isn't just an attack on our precious natural environment, it's a public health catastrophe.

"The dire situation at Wellow Brook alone is a microcosm of the failures of the some 10 Environment Secretaries we've had since 2010.

"Enough is enough. Local people shouldn't have to worry about whether their local beauty spots are sewage infested. I am doing all I can at a regional level to clean up the 14 years-worth of Tory mess.

"But we need ministers to play their part as well. That means many things - not least ensuring water bosses are held legally and financially accountable for their recklessness with our rivers and lakes, and by toughening up regulations that allow the system to be abused."
